Postdoctoral Position in Transcriptional Regulation

Date Posted: 08/05/09

  • Full Description: A postdoctoral position is available in the laboratory of Shin-Han Shiu in the Department of Plant Biology at Michigan State University (http://shiulab.plantbiology.msu.edu) to study transcriptional regulatory networks, cis-regulatory logic, and their evolution in multi- and unicellular photosynthetic species. The project will focus on identifying the components of, architecture of, and interactions between regulatory networks of abiotic stress responses (e.g. light, CO2, and N-starvation) and chloroplast functions (e.g. amino acid and lipid biosynthesis, chloroplast biogenesis). In addition, the postdoctoral fellow will be involved in experimental validation of regulatory networks using state-of-the-art omics technologies. Candidates should have a strong background in (1) computational analysis of gene regulatory data AND/OR (2) experimental studies of gene expression, epigenetic regulation, and functions of transcription factors and their binding sites in any model system. Candidates with a strong computational background should have demonstrated experience (publications, thesis, or meeting abstracts) in whole-genome and network level study of transcriptional networks. For candidates with mainly an experimental background, demonstrated experience in basic programming (in any language) and large-scale data analysis (e.g. microarray study) is desired. The project is inherently interdisciplinary and the successful candidate is expected to be involved in both computational and experimental work. In addition, the postdoctoral fellow will be encouraged to attend workshops in organizational development and in college education to enhance their training experience.
  • Application Instructions: Candidates should send a SINGLE PDF or MS Word file containing (1) a cover letter summarizing research interests (1-2 pages), (2) CV with information on academic/work experience, awards, publications, and (3) names and contact information for 3 references by email to Shin-Han Shiu (shius at msu dot edu). Applications will be reviewed as they are received. Informal inquiries are welcome.

Graduate student

We are always looking for motivated students who are interested in multi-disciplinary works to bring experimental and quantitative biology together. The PI is affiliated with:

All these programs are degree granting. If you are interested in working in our lab, please apply to one of the above graduate programs and state your interest. If you want to know more about what we do, please contact the PI (shius at msu dot edu) for research experience or rotation.

Undergraduate programmer

We are always interested in hiring qualified student for hourly position (10-20 hours per week, $7-12 per hour, rate depending on experiences and qualifications). Job responsibilities include writing data parser and database programming. Undergraduate (including freshman) and graduate students are both welcome to apply, but the following qualifications are desired:

  • Experience in python or perl programming.
  • Taken basic statistics courses.
  • Enthusiastic.

Applicants should provide the following information in one file and send it to shius at msu dot edu:

  • CV that includes:
    • Contact info, particularly email.
    • Education
    • Awards
    • Your personal interests in research
  • Names, affiliations, e-mail addresses, and phone numbers of 1-2 professional references, preferably faculty/staff in MSU.
