Major projects

We are interested in questions about the evolution of duplicate genes. In particular, our research is focused on determining when gene duplication occurred, how it happened, and why certain genes tend to have a higher probability of being kept after duplication. Another focus in the lab is in identifying novel genes and novel cis-regulatory elements. Are there genes remaining in the intergenic regions of genomes? How is gene expression controlled by cis-elements in the promoter regions? We address these questions using both computational and experimental approaches in the following four areas.

Gene family and genome evolution

Projects related to understanding the evolutionary history of gene families and how genome change over time in plants.

Functional divergence of duplicate genes

Our works on determining the extent of functional divergence between duplicated genes.

Evolution of cis-regulatory elements

Projects on understanding how cis-element arise and change, with a focus on stress modulated genes.

Novel genes in genomes

Gene annotation remain incomplete and we have worked on identifying missing protein coding genes, particular those that are < 100aa.
